Mastering the London Congestion Charge

Everything you need to know about fees, zones, operating hours, and how to pay legally. Avoid penalties with our expert guide.

Understanding the London Congestion Charge

Driving in central London requires careful planning. The London Congestion Charge is a daily fee levied on most vehicles driving within the designated zone between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday, and 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm on weekends and bank holidays.

Introduced by Transport for London (TfL), this scheme aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the capital. Whether you are a tourist renting a car or a resident living near the boundary, understanding the congestion charge cost and rules is essential to avoid hefty Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).

Important Update:

The Congestion Charge operates every day except Christmas Day (December 25th). Always check your vehicle registration before entering the zone.

The Zone Boundary

The congestion charge London zone covers an area roughly equivalent to Inner London. Key landmarks inside the zone include the City of London, Westminster, Mayfair, Marylebone, Fitzrovia, Bloomsbury, St James's, South Bank, and Clerkenwell.

Major roads like the Inner Ring Road form the boundary. You do not pay to drive on the boundary roads, but you must pay if you cross them into the center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay congestion charge on weekends?
Yes. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public bank holidays, the charge applies between 12:00 noon and 6:00 pm.
What happens if I forget to pay?
If you miss the payment on the day, you have until midnight of the next charging day to pay the higher rate of £17.50. After that, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £160 will be issued.
Is the Congestion Charge the same as ULEZ?
No. They are separate charges. The Congestion Charge is for reducing traffic volume, while the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge is for reducing pollution. You may need to pay both if your vehicle does not meet emission standards and you drive in the central zone during chargeable hours.
